The idea from our prior knowledge of colour in the classroom has been quite conflicting. We have heard many times that classroom colours should be neutral and there should be no posters on the wall and we have also heard that students need visual stimulation and colour creates a positive and comfortable environment for students. Both Reid (2007) and Wellhousen & Crowther (2004), suggest that colour has a direct impact on students moods and feelings. It is also suggested that bright colours stimulate energy and excitement whereas pastels create a calming atmosphere. Throughout our experience within the field we have found that many high school classrooms are not purposely decorated to prevent or encourage certain types of moods or emotions.

The research into this topic is confirms that there could possibly be a need for either neutral or bright colours depending on the needs of your students. In terms of noise using colour to accommodate student’s needs and emotions how does a teacher create a classroom that has colour to suit every student’s needs? It is also a mystery as to how these mood altering colours are being presented; walls, bulletins, desks?
Would you take the time to ensure the colour of the classroom is meeting all students’ needs?
